Fremont Street is home to Viva Vision, the world’s largest video screen.  Each night the Viva Vision puts on a  graphical light show, which is known as the Fremont Street Experience. The graphical experience is produced each night using strips of LED lights attached to 2" x 2" tube steel frames. Originally built in 1994, this canopy hangs 90 ft. above the ground and stretches for 1,500 ft. over the 5-block entertainment district.

 

In 2018, Fremont Street Experience made plans to update the Viva Vision. The canopy renovations are being made by removing the individual tube steel frames/LED strip assemblies and replacing them with new pre-fabricated frame/LED strip assemblies of similar size and shape. The installation of these new assemblies will increase the resolution of the canopy to four-times the current resolution.

 

Architectural Resource Consultants (ARC) conducted a pilot project in order to confirm that the deliverables would meet the clients needs.

The main goals of the pilot phase were to: vet out laser scanning / survey workflow, determine whether some of modified frames are themselves repeatable dimensionally, prefabricate the frames from as-built data, test out installation workflow, and confirm the pre-fabrication process will be successful This pilot was critical to determine whether the level of accuracy (LOA40) spec. could be met.

 

The scope of work for this project was then broken down into 4 phases:     

  • Phase 1A scope included two methods of measure on sixty (60) west end column sub-frames.     

  • Phase 1B scope included scanning for space-frame brackets along one row of sub-frames from one end of the structure to the other.       

  • Phase 1C scope included scanning the canopy structural column supports from the ground. The primary structural members were modeled and used to extract the column grid and the angle and diameter of each column member. The results were presented in 2D CAD.     

  • Phase 1D scope included both 360 degree and still photos of the various existing conditions.

 

ARC worked during early morning hours so that the Fremont Street Experience remained fully operational and completed the project on-time and on-budget.
